About

Life happens. Instead of waiting around for whatever unfolds, we can make our ideal lives happen. This is not a rehearsal. This is the real thing. Time doesn’t stop if we procrastinate. It doesn’t stop for excuses…or settling…or thinking mediocre is good enough. Time marches on, regardless of whether we have lived the life of our dreams or not.

Exit Normal is the story of how I woke up and started living my own way: homeschooling my four kids, taking long-term travel sabbaticals, holding on to the things that matter, and letting go of the things that don’t. I share my stories to help inspire you to get out of your comfort zone to do those things you’ve always wanted to do. Taking even one brief sabbatical away from your regular life is a way to quiet the static and listen to your intuition. You only have one life to live. What do you have to lose?

What, you have kids? How could you take a long-term trip with kids? I’m here to tell you it IS possible. We have four children and have taken ten family sabbaticals, of varying lengths, to date. Whether you have only a couple of weeks or up to a year off, taking a family trip can be a fun, educational, bonding experience and is definitely something you should consider. 🙂

Happy travels!

Published author, worldschooling mother of four, and frequent traveler, Domini Hedderman is the author of the book, Exit Normal: How We Escaped With Our Family and Changed Our Life, which tells the story of her family's six-month sabbatical in Belize in 2012-13. Since that first trip, she and her family started worldschooling, took a second trip traveling across the U.S. in a 32-foot travel trailer, and then spent an awesome three months learning Spanish (and making friends) in Costa Rica. They spent two months in Mexico last winter, practicing Spanish and just returned from five weeks in France and Italy, where they enjoyed the magic of the home exchange. Her soul mission is to teach her kids about the beautiful diversity of the world and to inspire them--and others--to live the life of their dreams.
