I’ve been thinking a lot about Belize lately. Maybe it’s this Florida sunshine in December that’s triggering the memories. One thing I realize: Belize really, really changed me. From the way I live my days to the things I surround myself with… the people I attract and the activities I engage in… all of these have shifted. I’m transformed. Maybe it wasn’t Belize, per se. Maybe I just happened to be in Belize when I was just ready for my own transformation.
I do know one thing happened. I opened my eyes. It wasn’t Belize, but it was getting out of my comfort zone long enough to let it happen, to get out of my own way!
The Belize sabbatical with my family allowed all of us to let go of the control of our lives for long enough that we let the Universe step in and help guide us. It was nothing short of amazing and the start of something really awesome. It was as though we, as a family, turned the page to a new way of thinking. When we used to think, “We can’t,” we now think, “Of course we can!” We used to ask, “Is it possible?” And now we ask, “Why not at least try? What’s the worst thing that could happen?”
The tortillas and beans we ate in Belize on a regular basis didn’t necessarily stick as a habit. But our ability to ‘let go and let God’ did stick. When we stepped on that airplane in November 2013, we stepped out of our comfort zone. That was the beginning of a transformation phase for Kevin and I… the beginning of our cocoon phase of waiting. Only now are we beginning to burst out of that cocoon and spread our wings.
Setting your intention on something you want in your life and then letting go of yourself long enough to let it happen is not the easiest thing to do.
The thing is, all of the parts and pieces of what you want and need are there for you: your latent personality traits, the people who can help you who are waiting in the wings, the events about to happen, maybe even the phone calls or emails that will soon come to help you on your way.
You only need to get out of your own way. Let go of the idea that you’re in control of it all, anyway. Let go of the preconceived notions, let go of propriety, let go of convention. Let go of the way you think it should have been. Or even the way you think it should be.
We humans think we have more control over our lives than we do. Once we realize the control is not in our hands but rather in the hands of a greater force, we can just breathe… and let that incredible, beautiful, amazing Force work.
Set your intention, focus your thoughts every minute on the dreams you want to see happen in your life, and then let go of it all. Only then will those dreams unfold, in a miraculous way, before your very startled but giddy eyes.
I know it happens like this because I’ve seen it happen in my own life. I’ve also seen it happen in the lives of many, many friends. And my life keeps getting better and better now that I’ve discovered the secret (which I must admit to even now not fully understanding).
The dream you have in your heart is there already. It’s the stuff you think about right before you fall asleep. Maybe the longing is covered up by a layer of dust from disuse or a thin veneer of fear that seems too thick to crack. But the dream is there, just below the surface. All you have to do is realize its presence, step back, and let it happen.
Let go, get out of your own way, and see what wonders blossom in your life.
It’s a beautiful thing.
